Soulflower

from the LP Bizarre Ride 2 the Pharcyde, Delicious Vinyl Records, 1992

Had these guys come along just a couple of years earlier than they did I guarantee they’d be spoken of with the same regard as De La or Tribe, and even though the Pharcyde enjoyed a lively underground following in the ‘90s, I still feel they will remain perpetually underrated. The foursome hailed from South Central L.A., which makes their complete lack of a tough-gangsta-edge a welcome surprise; this track is a great example of the vibe these cats could bring, peak-hour party anthems that move your feet and make you smile, “…people promise you bowl of cherries but don’t forget there are pits; no hints, its quicks, its like the water and grits…and that’s I, high, I better get by because my ally, about to flip that crazy shit while I go look for some thai…I need some Zig-Zags, Zig-Zags, how I need those Zig-Zags, I need some Zig-Zags, Zig-Zags, how I love to get high…” Big props to J-Swift for the insane beats & production throughout here.
