Face to Face

from the LP Discovery, Virgin Records, 2001

The staggered collages of production whiz Todd Edwards proved to be the perfect compliment to Daft Punk’s increasingly retro vibe, as evidenced by this track, the closing number on what was Thomas Bangalter & Guy-Manuel Christo’s magnum opus; these guys, along with some of their French brethren, were largely responsible for bringing the ‘80s feel back into popular music, without any trace of irony either. This album became the backbone to an odd animated film (Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem) about a band of turquoise people from outer space, the same people featured in that music video they made for their megahit “One More Line”, er, ahem, “One More Time”---anyways, it’s worth checking out if you are a fan of anime or Daft Punk. Ultimately, this song and many of the other tracks on this LP have gone on to inspire and inform new genres of beats, particularly within the current electroclash, dubstep and tech-house trends. A couple of friends & I had the divine pleasure of seeing them perform live, as robots, at Red Rocks on their last tour, a show that blew everyone’s highest expectations out of the fucking water man---two words: electric pyramid…just youtube it: “Daft Punk”, “Red Rocks”, “2007”, and set your face to stunned.
