from the LP Let’s Get Together, Shyrlden Records, 1977
Woke up to a -6 degree windchill this morning--- hello jack frost! It’s the final stretch of the semester, and all my students are busily pumping out the research papers they should have been working on over a month ago; I can’t front though, I was the master procrastinator when I was in school, and that approach worked just fine for me. Singer Pam Todd & Love Exchange certainly didn’t want any delay in this smoky disco classic, the title cut off of their sole album as a crew; Todd’s first credits were as a backing singer for Bob Seger, but by this time producer Greg Carmichael had heard her sing, saw the potential & coaxed her out to NYC. All the little touches he put into this number work together seamlessly: strings, brass, percussion, handclaps… the only thing that strikes me (and anyone familiar with Carmichael’s work) is the lack of a synth. Maybe he just figured that it was perfect as is---word is much-loved DJ Larry Levan certainly thought so, championing this 12” more than he did most; you gotta love the hair styles and Ms. Todd’s big heart-shaped sunglasses on the cover of the LP, originals of which trade for upwards of $150 at auction. Besides, what better way to stay warm through the cold days of winter; “…let’s get together, hon’, and make some love, make some love…”
