Second Generation Woman

from the LP Entertainment , Reprise Records, 1969

Well the times, they had a chang-ed, although that didn’t necessarily translate to people initially having any real understanding of what those changes meant at the gender level, as this song endearingly (naïvely) illustrates for us here: this “second generation woman” has clearly freed herself from some of our culture’s stigmas and double standards (“…smokes like a man, getting higher than I can, she knows how; ahead of her time but she don’t give a damn, why should she…”), but without demanding more from all the lazy guys laying about she winds up looking more like a sluttier, stoned version of the first generation woman (“…last thing you gotta do is force her into lovin' you, no need to; knows when the time is right, comes to you without a fight, she wants to…she feeds you, loves you, lets you know she digs you, she's in a hurry… she looks good to handle from a personal angle, second generation woman…”)! Given that these were a bunch of cheeky British chaps, one has to give Family the benefit of the doubt that perhaps they were sardonic & progressive enough to be making the above stated point---that said, my money’s on them just being happy to have had all those birds around who wanted to fuck & get high, but would still take care of them like a mother. You ask most people who attempted the communal living gig in the ‘60s and they’ll give you the same description: the men sat around smoking weed, playing guitar & eating while the hippie women cooked, cleaned, took care of the kids, laundry, animals, etc… You know what they say, ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same’.
