Fee

from the cassette Junta, self-released, 1988

I’ll confess right away that I’m not a big Phish phan---their early stuff (i.e. the White Tape, this one, Lawn Boy) is fun, but I jumped off that train long before it turned into a wasteland of drunken, belligerent frat boys; with that being said, suffice to say that I spent a good portion of time listening to this tape. It’s just irresistible, the expansive and playful nature of all the songs herein, made at time when these guys were still playing for chump change throughout the New England college circuit. This calypso-themed song has special significance for me as it was often sung by an old pal of mine, a wild-eyed lady named Marshall (Sheesh for short); she always laughed at the part when Milly slices Floyd’s nipple with a piece of paper, and let me tell you, Sheesh had a terrific cackle! Maybe that’s what keeps me coming back to this tape, it’s connected to a time in my life when I was really stretching my wings, living without a care for what was to come later.
