Made a decent dent in my stack of grading over the weekend--- well, all the easy stuff like tests anyways, leaving only a leaning tower of research papers glowering at me from the coffee table. I can’t complain though, because if a task can be done in one’s underwear while smoking a bowl, frankly, it will never truly feel like “work”, dig? I’m not entirely sure about the etiology surrounding use of the word ‘dank’ in a positive way, but it was clearly already in place by the time of this debut LP by the criminally slept-on funk crew Dayton (I bet you can guess where they were from…); they continued to move away from this grittier funk vibe with each successive release, eventually turning into a smooth boogie unit, but the sound heard here is mostly informed by their hometown peers, the Ohio Players. It’s not clear if they were making reference to marijuana, as is often the case with that word these days, or if they were just speaking to the general dankness of their funky jam here, but it works for me either way.
