Rag-A-Bone Joe

from the LP Pluto, Dawn Records, 1971

Where I live has a fairly steady homeless population, even when it’s cold, but come this time every year it swells noticeably with the increasing temperatures & longer days, and having now lived here for almost 7 years I’ve become familiar with some individuals that call the streets & woods around here their “home”. I was homeless on a couple of occasions in life, both by choice as a teenager & without choice, briefly, as an adult, and I can attest to the fact that there are certainly some individuals who choose that lifestyle--- albeit, not the majority; that said, the characters who do fall into that category are some of the most fascinating & spellbinding individuals I’ve ever had the fortune of meeting, people who truly have a different perspective on life than most of us. ‘Freedom’ is each individuals own pursuit, and who am I judge one man’s interpretation of that word from another’s; like Hendrix said, “…I’m the one that’s got to die when it’s time for me to die, so let me live my life, the way I want to…”
