from the LP Gap Band IV, Mercury Records, 1982Much like a peach that’s been freshly plucked or a strand of Mikimoto pearls, this mid-tempo number by funk stalwarts the Gap Band is the very definition of smoothness, not a harsh corner or edge to be found anywhere. The Gap Band, comprised of the three brothers Wilson (Charlie, Ronnie & Robert), toiled in funk obscurity for about a decade after moving to LA from their hometown of Tulsa, OK; no worries though, as it gave them ample time to perfect their killer 3-part harmonies and smooth grooves. Although I normally go in for their party-funk material (i.e. “Oops Upside Your Head” or “You Dropped a Bomb on Me”) more than the slower numbers, this one is so fucking sexy I had to get it out there; the piano, handclaps & minimal bongos just roll you along, and when they give us a little horn action it gives me goosebumps on my scalp!
