from the LP Sun Goddess, Columbia Records, 1974
Okay, yes, this could undoubtedly just as well be titled “Scenes from an Afternoon Delight”, but it’s most definitely some high class shit, not the soundtrack to some run down amateur hour at the 3-for-1 porn theater. In fact, the more I listen to it, the more I’m tempted to create a re-edit that brings in some orgasmic moaning on top of this all, flang it out more, if that’s even possible. Thing is, Mr. Lewis was already a well accomplished jazz pianist & composer by the time of this LP---shit, he was nearly 40! That history in the business tempered his experimentalism just enough to make the whole affair seamless, funky enough for space cadets but still plenty grounded for jazzniks. He controls all the synths & pianos heard here, crafting the slinkiest stew this side of Siam, and much respect to Maurice Jennings on the drums & percussion. Earthy & natural baby, right on.
