Flowers

from the LP Today, Aurora Records, 1988

This track by critical darlings Galaxie 500 ambles along at such a narcotic-induced tempo that it always sets me a-rocking like some mental patient who’s just seen God, stung in a dissociative trance. Guitarist/vocalist Dean Wareham plays and sings with such disconnected abandon that it seems as if he might collapse under the mere strain of breathing at any second, coming off like a Lou Reed who isn’t trying as hard to be cool. The lyrics are equally dreamy and taciturn, “…I can never calm you down, and I can never turn you around, and I could never bring you flowers… I could be there when you're sleeping, I could be there in your dreams; I could be there when you're sleeping, I could be inside your dreams, oh yeah…” Cool factoid: the drums you hear on this were borrowed from a young Conan O’Brien, who was the roommate of Galaxie’s drummer, Damon Krukowski, at Harvard!
