Of the many bands to come out of the psychedelic ‘60s who tasted success but never reached full-on stardom, Spooky Tooth is among my absolute favorites; the stoned disposition and campfire vibe which permeates through this album is irresistibly organic and the music is tremendously accomplished from a songwriting standpoint---there isn’t one throwaway on this LP! Mike Harrison’s warm vocals fall somewhere between tamer versions of Rod Stewart and Paul Rodgers, coming across totally sincere and vulnerable when he sings, “…I have searched but I never could find, a way to make my true self unwind, and while I sit here waiting to die, I can see what I am, I can tell you why…the time's right ahead, can't you see, ‘cause my life's running out, out on me; I forgotten how it was, let me be, so hangman hang my shell, on a tree…” Spooky Tooth never sounded better than they did here, on what would turn out to be the last release for the original lineup; dig how baked everyone looks on the cover!
