Sad Road to the Sea

from the LP Growers of Mushroom, Decca Records, 1971

The swagger and bravado of Zeppelin’s heavy attack on the blues produced a seemingly endless stream of copycats in its wake, all of them containing widely varying levels of musicianship and pomp---Leaf Hound was one of the better acts in that milieu, and although they only stayed together long enough to record this sole LP, they amply demonstrate that they had the formula down pat. First of all, choosing to make both the band name and album title references to drug use is going to endear yourself to the wasted masses right away; thankfully, these guys also had the chops to back it up. Singer Peter French would go on to head Atomic Rooster right after this group split, and though his howling vocals don’t exactly give Robert Plant a run for his money, he can certainly hold a tune.
