Brother Man...

from the LP The Mack, Motown Records, 1973

Anyone familiar with Dr. Dre’s trendsetting opus The Chronic will immediately recognize the guitar riff and dancing flute which provide background to a conversation that’s clipped from the film this album soundtracked, “…you really don’t understand, do you? Hey man, don’t you realize, and all the fuss to make this thing work…”, only here, we get to hear the pimp’s side of the story as well. Willie Hutch was a Motown mainstay through the ‘70s, both writing songs for other people (most notably the Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There”), and putting out his own albums---more than a couple of which were soundtracks to some of the era’s finest blaxploitation flicks, as was the case here. This track rolls through several styles of music, from light jazz to funky soul and even containing a disco-funk bridge; the strings are so exceptionally expansive, they lift you right up!
