from the LP Fruits of Nature, Wild Pitch Records, 1991The late ‘80s & early ’90s hip-hop scene was, in my opinion, by far and away the most creative and progressive era of rap music we have ever seen, evidenced by this engaging, jazzy number from New York-based duo Hass G and Kool Kim, known collectively as the UMC’s. The use of samples taken from across a wide range of musical genres (classical, jazz, soul, funk) ran parallel with the feeling at that time that you could do anything in hip-hop; big ups to Hass G here, I think he flows better on the mic (first verse) and he also co-produced the beats. I have always loved rap music that is uplifting without being preachy, and this track is guaranteed to get your head bobbing & your toes tapping---just avoid any urges to bust out the “cabbage patch” or “running man”…!
