from the EP Panesian Nights, Paper Bag Records, 2009The combination of vintage equipment with modern-day production & editing techniques makes for a tantalizing ode to the sound of post-disco; to be honest, were it not for the meticulously clean recording, this could have actually fooled me into believing it was the long lost demo of some aspiring synth-tastic band from the early ‘80s. CFCF is the moniker of one Michael Silver, a resident of Montreal (which is where he got the name CFCF from, the initials of a major television channel up there) who manages to nail the underground side of ‘80s dance culture right on the head, even though the 22 year-old wasn’t alive to hear his influences when they first came out. The slick and sexy ambiance within this and all his songs made me think of French house music (i.e. Daft Punk or Cassius), so it’s not surprising that he hails from Quebec---how come they understand freshness so well? Props for the Edward Gorey-esque cover art.
