from the 12” single, Atlantic Records, 1982Having studied under the tutelage of Arthur Baker (electro wizard behind Planet Patrol) and having gotten to play the keys in Man Parrish’s “Hip Hop Bee Bop” and Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock”, Quadrant Six was keyboardist John Robie’s very own project and chance to show he wasn’t just Baker’s lackey. A robotic voice starts things off by suggesting we “…leave it overnight, I’ll get the job done right, I am your body mechanic…” Aren’t cars the perfect, ahem, vehicle for sexual metaphors?! “Anytime will do, you don’t need no appointment; make it drive like new, you won’t be disappointed…” Mr. Robie effortlessly proves himself a worthy producer on his own, and gives us all a mantra for the ages, “…let me pump some funk into your tank…”
