from the 7” single, SST Records, 1984Always included when discussing the archetypes of American post-punk and indie rock in the early – mid ‘80s, Hüsker Dü’s discography commands a great deal of respect for the considerable influence it would have over alternative rock in the decades which followed; listening to this blistering rendition of a classic psychedelic number by the Byrds leaves no doubt as to why they hold the legacy they do. They hailed from Minneapolis, a town I spent a couple of years living in and must tell you, rocks, were it not for the butt-ass arctic weather. Guitarist Bob Mould was the primary songwriter, and his aggressive slapdash style of playing largely defined their sound, along with über-catchy melodies which hinted at them loving groups like Big Star and Cheap Trick as much as the Germs or Sex Pistols. This song never sounded better, in my humble opinion, as Mould both plays his guitar and rants & raves like a madman possessed; truly, this is an epic cover!
