from the LP Make Up Your Mind, Capitol Records, 1983Another brainchild of the illustrious and infamous producer Jacques Fred Petrus (ala B.B.&Q. Band, Change & Luther Vandross, et al), High Fashion served more as a training ground for the singers involved, who all went on to more success with solo work later in the decade. This isn’t to say they were a crappy band---on the contrary, a high percentage of quality tracks can be found on both of the LPs these guys released; it more speaks to the precise intuition of Petrus, putting extra-funky bands together left and right back in the early ‘80s. The pace here is quick, very brisk actually, and the lyrics may give us some indication, “…it’s kinda strange how we met up, both sniffin’ coke inside some crazy bar…”; when you look back over popular music in the late 70s and 80s, cocaine played a central role in moving the BPM of songs higher and higher, there can be no doubt. The almighty key-tar plays a tight riff throughout the song, and check out singer Eric McClinton’s bad-ass jheri curls on the album cover---pass the Soul Glo!!
