Though he will always be most remembered for his slam-poetry rant “The Revolution Will Not Be Televsied”, writer/singer Gil Scott-Heron actually released a slew of high quality jazz-funk albums in the 1970s; he also rocked one of the more badass afros of that era, in my opinion. This admonishment about alcoholism could come off preachy and annoying in the wrong hands, but Gil’s observations are more laments than verdicts, just telling it like it is; the sparse but propulsive instrumentation hits the mark dead on, particularly the interpretive flute.
