Perhaps no other band better espoused the carefree aesthetic and endless array of possibilities the post-punk scene had inherited than did Bristol, England’s own Maximum Joy; for real, they sound like they were having so much fun on every one of their recordings! Max Joy formed from the ashes of two other fairly well-known post-punk bands, Glaxo Babies and the ironically named Pop Group (they were anything but), coming together under the tutelage of multi-instrumentalist Tony Wrafter and singer Janine Rainforth. Always grounded in a firm percussive groove, this song is a great example of how expansive and boundless their music was---if this doesn’t make you start moving around, well, I hope an injury is your excuse! Rainforth’s processed vocals echo back and forth, adding to the trippy feel her lyrics provoke, “…and the lollipops laugh as I smile, and the crayfish dance all the while…”
